How a fence build runs

We visit to check the boundary, the ground and the wind exposure, then quote in writing by the metre with posts, rails, palings, gates and finish itemised. Fences up to 2.5 metres high are exempt from building consent; taller fences and retaining walls that hold back ground need consent, and boundary fences are shared with your neighbour under the Fencing Act, which we can help you talk through. A typical residential fence is a few days on site.

Where we build fences

We are based at Timberlea in Upper Hutt and work across the Wellington region: Wellington city from Karori and Johnsonville to Miramar and Island Bay, Lower Hutt including Petone, Eastbourne and Wainuiomata, all of Upper Hutt, Porirua, and the Kapiti Coast from Paekakariki to Otaki. Travel is built into the quote, not added afterwards.

For Upper Hutt see our timber fences in Upper Hutt page. Our guide to choosing the right fence for Wellington wind and privacy covers the design choices.

Built for Wellington wind

A fence is a sail. In Wellington that means posts set deeper and closer together than the minimum, concrete footings sized for the exposure, H4 treated posts, H3.2 rails and galvanised or stainless fixings depending on how close to the coast you are. Paling, batten and board fences, horizontal slat fences, post and rail, and gates and entry features are all built the same way: to stand up for twenty years, not two.

Timber fence builders for wind and slope

As timber fence builders working across Wellington, we deal with the same two conditions on almost every job: wind and slope. Post depth, rail spacing and whether the fence steps or rakes down the section are decided on the first site visit, not on the day the posts go in. A boundary fence also involves your neighbour, and the Fencing Act 1978 sets out how the cost of a boundary fence is normally shared between adjoining owners.

If the fence is part of a wider outdoor project, see our timber decks in Wellington. For tired existing fences and weatherboards, our property maintenance service may be the simpler fix. FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of timber fences do you build?

We build a wide range of timber fences, including paling fences, horizontal and vertical slat designs, boundary fencing, privacy fences, and custom entry gates to suit both residential and lifestyle properties.

Can you build a fence to match my existing property style?

Yes. Every fence is custom designed to suit your home, section layout, and style preferences, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing result that complements your property.

Do I need council approval for a timber fence?

In most cases, standard residential fences do not require consent, but this can vary depending on height, location, or boundary conditions. We assess your project and advise if any approvals are required.

What materials do you use for timber fencing?

We use high-quality treated timber and construction methods suited to New Zealand’s climate, including coastal and high-wind areas, to ensure long-term durability and performance.

How long does it take to build a timber fence?

Most timber fencing projects are completed within a few days, depending on fence length, design complexity, and site conditions. We provide clear timeframes and keep you informed throughout the build.

Do I need my neighbour's agreement for a boundary fence?

Under the Fencing Act the cost of an adequate boundary fence is normally shared, and your neighbour should be given notice. We can help you with what to put in writing.

What affects the cost of a fence?

Length, height, style (paling is the most economical, horizontal slat the most expensive), the ground, and the number of gates. We quote per metre with those parts itemised.
