Why Choose West Beach Construction for Your Deck?
How a deck build runs
Site visit to look at the ground, the fall, sun and wind, and how the deck should connect to the house. Then a written quote that covers foundations, framing, decking, balustrade, steps and finish. Decks with a floor more than 1.5 metres above the ground need a building consent, which we manage; lower decks are exempt but still built to the Building Code. A typical deck is one to three weeks on site depending on size and height. We finish with the stain or oil you have chosen and leave the section tidy.
Where we build decks
We are based at Timberlea in Upper Hutt and work across the Wellington region: Wellington city from Karori and Johnsonville to Miramar and Island Bay, Lower Hutt including Petone, Eastbourne and Wainuiomata, all of Upper Hutt, Porirua, and the Kapiti Coast from Paekakariki to Otaki. Travel is built into the quote, not added afterwards.
For Upper Hutt see our timber decks in Upper Hutt page. On the coast, read about timber deck builders on the Kapiti Coast.
Timber, fixings and Wellington wind
Wellington sits in high and very high wind zones, and coastal suburbs add salt. We build joists and bearers in H3.2 treated pine, use stainless or the correct hot-dip galvanised fixings for the exposure zone, and fix balustrades to resist the loads the Building Code requires rather than the minimum that looks fine. Decking choice is between treated pine, hardwoods such as kwila and vitex, and composite; each has a different cost, look and maintenance profile, which we talk through on site. Our guide to building decks for Wellington wind and coastal conditions goes into the detail.
What clients say
"We needed a small job done very quickly. Ethan rearranged his schedule and got it done straight away, to a good standard. Good communication. Happy to recommend Ethan to others."

"Ethan and the team did an awesome job replacing a rotten bottom plate, and replacing a rotten floor in the basement of my rental property. The quote was very detailed and he solved problems I did not realise I had without asking, like swapping the door opening direction so it does not strike the new floor. Will definitely use West Beach for the next few building jobs."

Timber decks planned with the rest of the section
A deck rarely stands on its own. It is often planned together with a privacy screen or boundary fence, and our timber fences in Wellington page explains how we build those for wind and slope. Where a new deck is part of opening the house to the garden, it is worth planning alongside an extension or new doors so the floor and deck levels meet cleanly.
Before you talk to deck builders, our guide on what to consider before you build a deck covers the main decisions, from timber choice and height to consent and upkeep.
